Should Your Small Business Run Google Ads?

Google Ads promises fast results, but it can also burn money quickly. Visibility and clicks don’t automatically equal revenue.  I’ve worked with Google Ads since 2011 and have listed a few pros and cons below.

Pros:

  1. Google Ads gets your business in front of people who are searching for what you offer. With very specific keywords, a small budget may attract high-intent traffic.
  2. Ads can start driving clicks and leads fairly quickly if there’s intent. Do people want what you sell?
  3. You decide how much to spend and aren’t locked into a specific time frame. You can pause, adjust, or stop campaigns at any time, and you can track it from day one.

Cons:

  1. In competitive industries, clicks are expensive. A small budget may disappear before you start seeing conversions.
  2. Even with the amount of AI available, Google Ads isn’t automatic. The wrong keywords and a mediocre landing page can waste money quickly.
  3. Google Ads usually needs a learning period. If success means getting conversions immediately, you’ll be disappointed.

Do these three things before deciding:

  1. Use the free Google Ads Keyword Planner for an estimate of search volume and costs. This helps you decide whether your budget has a chance of working in your market.
  2. Ask someone to look at your site with fresh eyes. If it’s confusing, slow, or not clear about what visitors can do, fix that first. Ads won’t compensate for a weak site.
  3. Hire someone with Google Ads experience to set things up or review your account to save money in the long run. You don’t have to outsource forever, just long enough to avoid common mistakes.

Google Ads shouldn’t run indefinitely if they’re a money pit. Give campaigns enough time to learn, but be conservative with expectations and be willing to stop if the numbers don’t make sense.

Note: Like everyone, I do use AI tools to help with content, but I, being a real person, wrote this post. There’s no universal answer to this question so these tips are based solely on my experience.
